The Enchanter

I was a Harry Potter kid growing up, and despite falling out of love with the series for a wide variety of reasons, magic schools will always hold a special place in my heart. I also loved Shoenn Manga, and remember buying the newest Naruto books released to see what was happening during the Chūnin Exams. This has since transformed into an adult love of the Progression Fantasy genre, featuring readable prose, fun battles, and lots of power ups. There’ve been a couple good marriages between these two elements, and even a few with lots of queer rep (Arcane Ascension and Mage Errant both get a big shout out for this!), but Journals of Evander Tailor is by far my favorite. The Enchanter is the first book in the journey, and I’ll keep singing its praises as long as I can.

The Premise:
Evan is the human adoptive son of an elvish tailor. When he discovers that he has magic, albeit weakly, he decides to take the risk of attending an expensive university to broaden his future prospects. When he arrives, he discovers a system set up for nobility to succeed on the backs of commoners, strange eldritch creatures in the woods, and a desperate need to grow his power quickly and avoid being drafted into the military via flunking out.

Avoid if Looking For: beautiful prose, queer-friendly worlds, magic that remains mystic and unexplained

The Witness for the Dead

The Goblin Emperor won me over with its baroque tangle of royal ettiquette, its optimistic worldview, and a wonderful inversion of typical portrayals of monarchies. It’s sibling series is none of those things, and presents a story that feels very familiar in style, yet the polar opposite in tone. A subdued noir novella, Witness For the Dead does not require reading The Goblin Emperor to enjoy; it follows a side character far from the action and events of the previous story. In fact, there were surprisingly few easter eggs connecting the two.

The Premise:
Celehar is a Witness for the Dead, a priest with some small ability to connect with the souls of the recently deceased. He lives far from the courts of power, and mostly uses the skill to solve murders, arbitrate wills, kill ghouls, and make sure the dead are treated with respect. This book follows a nasty noble house dispute, an accusation of spousal murder, and the death of a famed opera singer. And all the while, Celehar hides his homosexuality from a world which despises him for it.

Avoid if Looking For: upbeat stories, highly structured mysteries

The Bloodsworn Saga

Normally I review books one at a time. The Bloodsworn Saga made a lot of sense to review as a full trilogy however. Some series develop and shift as they go on, each book taking on something new. They might expand the setting, embrace different themes, or focus on different characters. Bloodsworn Saga, however, is remarkably consistent. Book 1 would receive more or less the same praise and criticism as book 3, with my enjoyment depending on my joy and patience for both aspects. Also, it was tough to resist the call of displaying three of my favorite fantasy covers together. Bekki Guyatt (designer) and Marcus Whinney (illustrator) outdid themselves on these. If you’re looking for epic fantasy with lots of combat, lots of monsters, and big scary gods, this is your series.

Avoid if Looking For: books without plot armor, attention to theme and character development

The Last Sun

Historically, Urban Fantasy hasn’t been a genre that I’ve found particularly compelling. As a kid, I was looking for more grand adventures; and as an adult, werewolves and vampires just didn’t call my name unless they were doing something interesting and creative with them. The Last Sun was a book I gave a shot while looking for queer leads in fantasy, and while it wasn’t a perfect book, it’s certainly one that I’ll be reading more of in the future.

The Premise:
Rune is the last member of a fallen house of Atlantis, which has relocated to Nantucket in the modern era. Once raised in opulence, he now finds himself working contract jobs for those with the same kind of power and influence his father used to have. He’s been hired to hunt down a missing son of Judgement, but it quickly devolves into something altogether more complicated, both for Rune on a personal level, and the island as a whole.

Avoid if Looking For: books without graphic sexual assault, books that resolve every mystery in one book

The Darkness Outside Us

I intended for this book to be a light, fluffy read. Picked up in an airport bookshop as something to occupy me as I headed out to a summer teaching gig in Boston, I thought I was going to read a cute (and possibly spicy) romance set in a spaceship. I did not expect the emotional rollercoaster of stress, excitement, and sheer existential dread this book would pull out of me. It’s stood the test of time and is just as good on a reread as that first experience.

The Premise:
Ambrose is an astronaut from ‘not UN’ and Kodiak is from ‘not Russia’. The two countries, in a long cold war, have sent the two young spacefarers on a rescue mission. They aren’t supposed to interact at all with each other unless absolutely necessary, but Ambrose is curious about his hot neighbor, and who else is he supposed to talk to on this ship? But there are also some unexplained oddities that are nagging at him.

Avoid if Looking For: straightforward romances, thorough worldbuilding

The Weavers of Alamaxa

The Daughters of Izdihar was a phenomenal novel. I loved it for the nuanced female relationships, examination of privilege within activists movements, and nuanced thematic work that was willing to put aside traditional plots to build something fascinating. Unfortunately the sequel is none of these things, and was a disappointing second half to this duology.

The Premise:
This book picks up with Nehal and Giorgina separated, but with war in Alamaxa. The Zirani are seizing the city, with Giorgina drafted into in its defense in exchange for her freedom. Nehal has been kidnapped by the Zirani, and finds herself far from home.

Avoid if Looking For: sequels that build on the strengths of it’s predecessor

Wolf of Withervale

I was drawn to Wolf of Withervale because I’ve been looking for good Epic Fantasy with Gay leads for a while. I’ve found bundles of romantasy, some more experimental stuff, but precious little in the classic older style … but gay. And Wolf of Withervale was exactly that. Massive world about to be thrust into turmoil, magical relics of ancient civilizations, young kid finding himself in the limelight through merest chance. It’s got a lot of what epic fantasy looks for, and it filled the itch I’d been looking for.

The Premise:
Lago’s life changes forever when he is entrusted with a wolf mask. He forgets about it for years only for the wider world to come knocking. He and his closest friend seek shelter in one of the massive, ancient, and mysterious domes that dot the world. And across the continent, the drums of war are pounding. Magical connections with animals, shapeshifting, and romance (including while shifted) are all major parts of this story.

Avoid if Looking For: books that start in the middle of the action, deep nuanced characterization

The Daughters of Izdihar

It’s rare that a one line pitch for a book makes me immediately spring for a novel (Lesbian Necromances in Space didn’t get me for Gideon the Ninth) but when I heard ‘women’s rights movement in an industrial-age Cairo analogue” this went straight to my bookshelf. And while the description isn’t perfect – it should mix in some Avatar the Last Airbender references – it’s pretty darn close, and an excellent execution of that concept.

The Premise:
This book follows two women: Nehal, a noblewoman in an arranged marriage who wants to join the army, and Giorgina, who works in a bookshop and is grappling the love of her life got marrying to Nehal against his will. The book’s primary focus is how each of them interacts with the women’s rights movement ‘The Daughters of Izdihar’. There are protests, speeches, multiple prison cells, anti-weaving (bending) sentiment, and a looming war with the neighboring country.

Avoid if Looking For: novel depictions of magic, violence-forward stories

Not Even Bones

I’m not a person who can handle gruesome depictions of core when presented with the slow, deliberate pace of a medical show or some darker parts of fantasy. When in the middle of an action scene, sure, but torture is something I struggle with. As I’ve read more horror over the years though, I’ve started to appreciate it more and more. And if you’re interested in a dark story that feels a lot like watching Dexter or You, then Market of Monsters will be right up your alley

The Premise:
Nita is the teenage child of a couple who hunts and kills supernatural creatures. Some are monsters, but others are intelligent people, basically humans with some extra bells and whistle. Nita dissects the bodies, packaging them for sale on the black market. But when her mother brings a live … specimen in, Nita lets him go. And then her mother puts Nita on the black market, to be killed for the highest bidder. Because Nita isn’t totally human either.

2024 Bingo: Final Card + Reflections

This is my fourth year of doing r/fantasy’s bingo challenge, and my fourth year of reading with the joy and intensity of my youth. You can find the official bingo announcement here, but the rules are simple: read 25 books by different authors, fitting a wide variety of categories.

I finally feel like I’ve caught up with a lot of the breakout hits I missed on my reading hiatus, though there are still some glaring gaps, and was ready to start exploring books as they were being released. And so this year I committed to completing a themed ‘published in 2024’ card. I committed to posting each review on r/fantasy, which eventually led to me creating this blog.
